A Prayer for Today

I offer this prayer for all health care workers who are combatting the Coronavirus.

Heavenly Father, we are living in a strange time. Help us to understand this moment and our role in it.

Please, please hear us. We need you, more than ever, for we are now afflicted by an unseen enemy. It haunts our streets, our dreams, and sometimes our bodies. Where it will go and when it will end, we do not know.

There is another contagion that threatens to paralyze us. It is fear. Help us Lord to wake from our fears. Fear is a fierce enemy; it gnaws at us; it will not be easily cast aside.

Yet we have you at our side. You are the balm of Gilead that can heal all wounds. Your gentle light shines on us even in the dark of night.  We hear your words,

“Hold on, do not despair, do not give up. I hold you in the palm of my hand. You are my people and I am your God. When you are exhausted, the waters of faith are there to refresh you. Open your heart and believe. What you do for me this day is why I have called you into being. You will care for others and I will care for you even as you walk in the valley of the shadow of death. There may be easier paths for you, but you are called to the ministry of healing. You can go where many others cannot go. You can do what many others cannot do. You are called to a unique task, the healing ministry of Jesus. Bring to this special ministry, the compassion of the lamb and the heart of the lion.”

Thank you, heavenly Father. We really, really need your embrace. Be with us us every day as we step into a hospital or a clinic ready for another day or night. We only ask that you make our hands your hands.

We pray all of this in the name of your son, Jesus Christ.

Thank You. Jess has a month left for her BSN from Emory, so she’ll be on the front lines soon. All prayers welcomed.
